CALCANEAL STRESS FRACTURE

WHAT IS A CALCANEAL STRESS FRACTURE?

A calcaneal stress fracture is caused by an overuse injury. This is when there is too much stress on the heel bone leading to internal breakage of the bone (microfracture). The heel will become diffusely tender and there can be swelling present. The pain can be present first thing in the morning and worsen throughout the day.

TREATMENT:

Diagnosis includes clinical exam, x-rays, and advanced imaging studies. Treatment is immobilization in a CAM boot or cast for 6-8 weeks followed by shoe gear and activity modifications.
