Fluoroscopy Guided Joint Injections
What is Fluoroscopy?
This is a form of X-ray imaging guidance that helps your doctor to locate the internal injection site where an injection, particularly a joint injection is to be administered. Fluoroscopy provides real-time images of an injection needle working its way into your tissue and into the joint.
How is the Fluoroscopy Guided Injection performed?
For most injections done fluoroscopically, the procedure is done with the patient lying on their back based on the diagnosis and the source of the pain. The area will be well-prepped and cleansed for the procedure. The physician numbs a small area of skin with an anesthetic (numbing medication). After the area is numb the physician uses x-ray guidance (fluoroscopy) to direct a very small needle into the target injection site. Once the correct position is confirmed, the anesthetic and steroid will be injected, and the needle is removed.
What should I expect after the procedure?
In the first day or two after injections, the patient may experience some soreness near the injection site. Some local tenderness may be experienced for a couple of days after the injections. Using an ice pack two to three times a day may help alleviate this for the first few days after the injection. This is a common result of the anesthetic wearing off before the anti-inflammatory effects have taken effect. The patient should go easy during this immediately after the injection and expect greater pain relief on the second or third day.
Some insurance companies do NOT pay for fluoroscopy guided injections. If your insurance should apply any amount of those charges to patient responsibility (copay, coinsurance, deductible, etc.) then you will be responsible for those charges.
