WHAT IS THE ACHILLES TENDON?
The Achilles tendon is a band of tissue that connects a muscle to a bone. It runs down the back of the lower leg and connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. Also called the heel cord, the Achilles tendon facilitates walking by helping to raise the heel off the ground.
Achilles tendinitis, achilles tendinosis, and achilles tendon rupture.
The options for treatment range from conservative to surgical. Some of the conservative options are: icing, anti-inflammatory medications, immobilization, physical therapy, calf stretching, orthotics, and ankle bracing. Surgical treatment may be necessary to address a more severe pathology in the tendon.
