SEVER’S DISEASE
WHAT IS SEVER’S DISEASE?
Sever’s disease is painful inflammation of the calcaneal growth plate (apophysis) located in the back of the heel. This is commonly seen in active children between the ages of 8-14. Symptoms include mild discomfort around the heel after activity, limping after activity, stiffness and pain 1st thing in the morning, pain alleviated by rest, and toe walking. Causes include tight calf muscles, flatfeet, sudden growth spurt, poor shoe gear, and walking barefoot.
TREATMENT:
Treatment includes decreasing/modifying activity, proper shoe gear and support, calf stretching, icing, oral anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, and occasionally CAM boot or cast immobilization. Pain tends to resolve with the conservative measures or when the growth plate fuses.
